Mission
The Region 8 mission is to facilitate a coordinated healthcare response to disasters throughout the region by augmenting existing resources, regional and community surveillance, Emergency Management systems and hospital preparedness. To accomplish this, the Region 8 Healthcare Coalition develops comprehensive plans, purchases and distributes equipment, hosts educational conferences and conducts training and exercises on a regular basis throughout the region. Region 8 maintains a Medical Coordination Center that can be activated to coordinate resources and assist in a healthcare response to any disaster.
Background
The Region 8 is a multi-disciplinary, multi-jurisdictional organization whose goal is to enhance domestic emergency preparedness for the healthcare community. Region 8 is one of eight coalitions in Michigan that was created in 2002 to ensure statewide readiness and interagency collaboration to respond to public health emergencies. The coalitions are geographically based within the jurisdictional lines of the eight Emergency Management Regions statewide.
Region 8, federally funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response Cooperative Agreement Hospital Preparedness Program, is comprised of hospitals, health departments, tribal health agencies, and other agencies such as the American Red Cross, Emergency Medical Services agencies, fire departments, Long Term Care sites, Federally Qualified Health Centers, institutes of higher learning, State and local government, non-profit organizations, and others. Region 8 has also formed strategic partnerships with hospitals, EMS agencies, and government officials in Wisconsin.
Region 8 serves the 15 counties of the Upper Peninsula.
